Modu: A Different Type of Phone (not a Nokia)

I stumbled across today's Fortune article titled "New phone morphs into multiple devices," and my first thought was - whatever, phones like the N95 ARE multiple devices already - why bother with morphing? The subject of the article is a new device called the Modu - a completely different take on the multi-functional cell phone.

Something a little different: Sony Ericsson W380 Phone

The W380 ain't your typical Sony Ericsson middle-of-the-road handset. This flip phone (and how many SE flip phones do you see around, anyway?) comes with some intriguing features: Gesture Controls, a cleverly hidden OLED external display, and the TrackID (similar to Song ID) application. And it actually looks decent, too.

Apple's New Firmware Bricking Hacked iPhones

Apple's new firmware update doesn't play nice with unlocked iPhones: thanks to the latest 1.1.1 update, numerous iPhone users with hacked handsets found themselves with "bricked" phones - aka mere paperweights.

The good news (according to engadget), is that it's now possible to downgrade an iPhone on a software level so you can still use third-party applications. Unfortunately, this does not allow you to unlock your phone again - so if you locked your iPhone due to the "upgrade", you're still stuck. At least for now.

Earlier this week, Apple sent out a warning that hacked iPhones may not work as intended afer the optional update.

You might want to hold off on updating your unlocked iPhone.

Preview: Palm's Centro Smartphone

Well, after getting home from the two days of revelry in Los Angeles that included a stint at a Nokia Nseries-themed mansion and a short tour around the city, all I can say is: it sucks to be back. Having wasted most of my day sleeping, I'm hoping that tomorrow I'll be able to write up the full-length account of what actually went down in LA.

Until then, you'll just have to read up on my newly rehashed news, starting with: the Palm Centro phone.

Preview: LG Viewty KU990 Phone

I rarely write about non-Nokia phones (something that I am seriously trying to change, honest). You can see this just by looking at the number of entries I've accumulated in the "Other Mobile Phones" category: a grand total of 12, and probably a third of those don't even belong there.

Meanwhile, I stumbled upon LG's latest press release for it's newest touch-screen phone: the Viewty. If you can get around the lousy name, the Viewty is actually quite an interesting device.

RIM Introduces New Blackberry Pearl Colors

In an attempt to make the Blackberry trendier than it really is, RIM (Research in Motion) announced the immediate availability of three new colors for its Pearl model: Blue, Sunset Red, and Gold.

Reviewer: Moto RAZR2 and Q9m Just Don't Cut It

Motorola's staking a lot on its new (late) 2007 line of mobile phones. One writer (actually, I believe it's the same guy who writes all the Associated Press cell phone-related news, including that iPhone vs. N95 vs. Ocean article) tested out two upcoming Moto models - the RAZR2 and the Q9m - over a period of several weeks.

Here's the short summary: the RAZR2 and Q9m are a big improvement over the originals, but in his own words, "neither of the new phones feels like a winner."

HP Announces Two New Smartphones

Hewlett-Packard is the 100-pound gorilla when it comes to personal computers, servers, and even PDAs. But now it's aiming to capture a slice of the lucrative smartphone market.

It's not too much of a surprise, considering that PDAs as of late have started shifting in that direction - think RIM's newer Blackberry models and the Palm Treo line (NOT Foleo).

After geohot published his method on hardware unlocking the iPhone, a web site called iphonesimfree came out of nowhere to announce that their group had successfully managed to unlock the phone via a software method. Fact or fiction?

Game-Changing Cell Phones: An Evolution

Head over to the Utility Belt to enjoy their latest article, titled "Game-Changing Cell Phones". Not surprisingly, the first handset on the list is none other than the iPhone. But Apple's marvel is not the oldest game-changing phone - that award goes to the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x, a gigantic beast of a phone.

"Don't let the thin profile fool you; this phone was about the size of your head."

It's almost like an evolution of cell phones: young and old. Also featured are the Blackberry, Treo, StarTAC, and the SideKick. Not one Nokia phone made the list. (!!)

Check it out.

Looking at the Palm Foleo

It's been turning out badly lately for Palm. After going through takeover speculation, a lousy first quarter, a stock that went up, down and sideways, and several analyst downgrades, Palm unveiled its latest device only to suffer from intense criticism.

Verizon's Answer to the iPhone: LG Prada KE 850

It's no unknown fact that the iPhone will debut on AT&T, which probably means mucho buckaroos and new subscribers for the wireless carrier. But what of Verizon, you might ask?

It turns out that the second-largest mobile phone service provider has been developing some new weapons phones that may just give the Apple phone a run for its money.

Helio's Ocean

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about how Helio is a mostly unknown service provider that leases radio spectrum from bigger guns - Sprint, Verizon, and Alltel, among others. Called a MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), Helio hasn't exactly taken off running since it started - the company reported a loss for the first quarter of 2007, and spent quite a bit on marketing in the process.
