NFC Is Coming: No, Seriously

It’s been a long, long time since I last wrote about near-field communication, a technology that makes all kinds of mobile phone transactions possible. Sony Ericsson Reports $466 Million Dollar Loss

Sony Ericsson sent out a press release earlier today that included a section called “Q1 Highlights”. There were only three bullet points. And the first was “Income before taxes was a loss of Euro 358 million (excl. restructuring charges)”…but we must remember, it could have been worse.

Nokia Reports Better-Than-Expected 90% Drop in Profit

In this day and age it doesn’t seem like it takes too much to beat the numbers that Wall Street analysts put up. Case in point: Nokia just announced that profits went from 1.2 billion euros last year (1.58 billion USD) to a meager 122 million euros (160 million USD) today. That’s a 90% slide. [...]

Rumor: Nokia To Jump on Netbook Bandwagon

Now here’s a new one. Apparently tired of just producing dumbphones, smartphones, and internet tablets, Nokia is now setting its sights on the now-ubiquitous netbook, says thestreet.com. Unfortunately, they’re a little late to the game. According to the article, the devices will be assembled by Taiwanese motherboard manufacturer Foxconn, the same company responsible for building [...]

WiMax Same As Betamax, Says Nokia

For a time, it looked like Nokia couldn’t figure out whether it wanted to go the WiMax route, or not. Cases in point: the company trumpeted its WiMax internet tablet sometime in October 2008, only to can it last January. (did anyone even buy one?) Nokia also joined the WiMax Forum organization, only to leave [...]

Earnings: Sony Ericsson Doesn’t Impress With Profit Warning (Q1 2009)

Sony Ericsson has been on a losing streak. Seriously. Two quarters ago (Q3 2008), the conglomerate/duo announced that it lost 25 million euros (~$34 million USD). Last quarter (Q4 2008), the company lost 187 million euros. And now, SE is about to land it’s biggest loss in a long time: 340 million euros. And that’s [...]

Nokia to Lay Off 1,700 Employees

Sad news for today: 1,700 Nokia employees are getting axed, thanks to the magic of cost-cutting and the global credit crisis. According to the press release, the lucky divisions being trimmed are sales, marketing, and technology management (which includes Devices research & development) – three divisions that you’d think Nokia would want to keep.

Nokia’s Q4 2008 Earnings Report: Dismal

Just when it seemed like the wireless industry was positioned to get back on track, out came Nokia with another issue of its Bad Earnings Report. Among the worst was the company’s profit, which sank 69% from last year. Major ouch.
