Preview: Nokia 3110 Evolve
At Nokia World 2007 in Amsterdam, Nokia shared its predictions for the future while dropping some hints about the company’s plans. Most of the announcements were music or convergence related (Comes With Music, Ovi, More N-Gage Randomness) except for one little device release: the Nokia 3110 Evolve bio-phone.
Despite its name, the 3110 Evolve isn’t an evolution of the latest technology packed into one monster featured phone. It’s actually the opposite.
Features on the tri-band candy bar are pretty basic: Series 40, 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, microSD expandable memory, BL-5C battery. Talk time of 3.5 hours. Is there anything good about this phone?
To answer in one word: yes. The long, complex answer is: recycled plastic. The phone uses special “bio-covers” that are made up of 50% renewable material, and the whole package comes in a barebones retail box that’s – surprise! – even more eco-friendly (and smaller). And since saving energy is all the rage these days, Nokia created a new charger just for the 3110: the high-efficiency AC-8. But don’t be fooled: it’s not a high-efficiency charger due to the extreme “omgwtf” speed in recharging your phone, it’s high-efficiency due to the fact that it “uses 94% less energy than Energy Star requirements”.
Going back to features, it’s nice to see that Nokia put in the mini-USB connector, versus the Stone Age Pop-Port connector.
Expect the Nokia 3110 to evolve its way into the cell phone market sometime in the first quarter of 2008. No price, but I’d guess somewhere in the vicinity of 10 Euro. ($948,847,834.12 USD)
