Vodafone’s New Cheapo Phones

May 23, 2007

Since the latest “in” thing is to make low-cost, budget phones for India and other emerging-market countries, Vodafone (officially the world’s largest mobile phone service provider) is jumping on the bandwagon with two new phones: the Vodafone 125 and 225 models.

Even though they look almost identical, there’s one key difference between the 125 and 225 phones: the 225 has a color screen.

Otherwise, the two handsets are both dual-band GSM candy bar style phones that are fairly thin (225 is 12.6mm, 125 is 13.1mm thick). Manufactured by China’s ZTE Corp., the phones are expected to begin selling in Egypt, Romania, and South Africa in the next few weeks.

The phones will retail for anywhere from the equivalent of $25 to $45.
