Playing PSX Games on the N900, Verdict: Better Luck Next Time

Running PCSX on the N900

Running PCSX on the N900...eh.

If you’ve been following the repositories (specifically extras-dev), you might have noticed two new additions to the Games category: PCSX and PSX4All. Both are Playstation 1 (PSX) emulators with the ability to run PSX CD images from the comfort of your N900. Unfortunately, I couldn’t download PSX4All thanks to some missing libraries, so the following is based on my impressions with PCSX. How did it fare?

And the answer is…not too well.

I tested four games with PCSX:

Chrono Cross: 2.8 average fps, super slow but graphics are actually pretty decent. NOT PLAYABLE though.
Metal Gear Solid: hangs at PIRACY warning. Definitely NOT PLAYABLE.
Ridge Racer 4: hangs at Namco intro screen. NOPE NOT PLAYABLE.
Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX: hangs after choosing a character, but the title screen music sounds great. Still NOT PLAYABLE.

It looks like Playstation emulation on the N900 has a long, long way to go.

One problem with PCSX is that you can’t disable sound. That’s a pretty major shortcoming. There’s a ton of other graphics, sound, and CD emulation options, yet nothing to actually turn off the sound to save a couple fps.

…which brings me to another point. As someone who has always championed emulators on mobile phones,
I’m not that excited about PCSX. It’s not that I wouldn’t love to play some FF7 on my N900; rather, it’s just that the performance is simply terrible (I couldn’t get more than 3.7 max fps in any of my tests, even during title screens and such) that it’s hard to see PSX emulation ever improving to the point of playability. Consider: if PCSX ran games three times faster, it would still be a measly 9 fps. NOT PLAYABLE

And battery drain is another issue. According to BatteryEye, it’s pretty severe.

Of course, there’s an important caveat here: this is only one of two PSX emulators out there right now. It’s possible, though unlikely, that PSX4All will offer noticeably better performance than PCSX. We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime I’ll stick to Xploder and Gweled.
