Analysts Say Don’t Buy Nokia (the stock)

March 12, 2009 in Wireless Industry News

In the past couple of days, the stock market has roared back to life – shares of Nokia stock have jumped over 20%. But according to several analysts, this isn’t the time to buy: more rough times are coming.

Nokia’s rally began after Texas Instruments, one of Nokia’s biggest chip suppliers, said that mobile phone chip sales were bigger than expected in the first two quarters of the year. Considering that was the first good news in an industry that’s been hit hard as of late (see Nokia’s last earnings report for more), thanks to a certain global recession, investors pushed Nokia’s stock up 8.2% in one afternoon. But with demand for mobile phones expected to slow in the future, is it worth investing in the largest mobile phone manufacturer?

One Thomas Langer obviously doesn’t think so:

“We still see that there are issues of market demand, product portfolio and corporate strategy,” he told Forbes, adding that he expected earnings-per-share for the company to be lower in 2010 than in 2009. Langer said he didn’t feel Nokia had a clear “master plan” for the mid-to-long-term, whether in proposed “netbook” portable devices or in online services.
