Software: Nokia Magnifier Is Beta For A Good Reason

Nokia Magnifier just might change your life. If it works.

One of the more recent releases by Nokia’s Beta Labs is the Magnifier application. Designed for Series 60 phones, the app blows up whatever text or object that you’re focusing on, and lets you turn on some nifty features like stabilization, contrast, and negative image (if supported by your phone’s camera, that is). Great idea on paper, not so great in execution. I have a feeling this one will be in beta for awhile.

There’s just two slight problems with the application on my E66. First up is the fact that I can’t focus on objects (kind of takes away from all the fun). Second is that using Magnifier to get up close and personal to an object actually results in the same (or worse) quality than using the camera and digital zoom.

However, if you’re the proud owner of an N95, E90, or N82, Nokia Magnifier will probably work for you. If you’ve got an E66, E71, N85, or N96, it seems like you’re outta luck.
