Nokia 8208: Officially NOT coming to the USA.

Seven months and twelve days ago. That’s when we first caught a (leaked) glimpse of the Nokia 8208, Nokia’s first CDMA dual-slider. And while Nokia’s American CDMA operations desperately need a pick-me-up like the 8208, it’s not coming here. At all. But it looks nice.

“Today Nokia announced an exciting new mobile device for its select CDMA markets outside the US.” – Official Press Release

“Are you freaking kidding me?” – Me, after reading Official Press Release

The 8208 isn’t exactly the world’s most featured-packed handset, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction compared to previous CDMA offerings. The phone isn’t an S60 device, nor is it an S40: instead, it runs an “S40 like UI” – that’s taken directly from the data sheet – and is probably the reason why Nokia never even bothered making an Nseries-level phone for the CDMAers out there. Why make a high-class CDMA phone when you don’t have the high-class UI to back it up?

So, the 8208′s main trick is the N95/N96/N86-like dual-slide, with three dedicated music keys. And on a related note, there’s also a 3.5 mm stereo jack, support for 16 GB microSD cards, and enough juice to last for 20 hours of listening pleasure. Not too shabby, but overall battery life is a bit weak: the 8208 gets only up to 4 hours of talk time. (860 mAh BL-4C) And another thing – the phone supports the Bluetooth 2.0 spec (with EDR), but unfortunately not A2DP.

The camera is 3 megapixels, the new average, with flash and video recording thrown in (and 6X digital zoom if you must know).

Other than the dual-slide, the only real notable feature is the 8208′s support for 3G EVDO.

Expect the Nokia 8208 some time in the first quarter of 2009. You will probably never see this phone ever again.
