Sony Ericsson’s Q4 2008 Earnings Report
So Sony Ericsson kicked off the phone makers’ quarterly earnings reports for the end of 2008, and it sure wasn’t good: the tag team effort between Sony and Ericsson AB produced a 187 million euro loss in Q4, on 2.9 billion euro revenue.
There were two big red flags in the report. First was sales – SE only shipped out 24.2 million phones, down 21% from a year earlier. Number two was the duo’s profit margin, which fell to 15% (from 32% last year). Average selling price also fell, but only by a mere 2 euros (121 euros vs last year’s 123 euros).
Of interesting note: according to Sony Ericsson president Dick Komiyama, the company will focus on high-end phones in the future to increase its margins.
