Preview: Nokia 2605 Mirage Phone (Mega Budget CDMA)

Nokia 2605 Mirage: A bare-bones CDMA phone. Uh, why?

The Nokia 2605 Mirage is slightly better than the recently announced 2608. Unfortunately, it’s still headed for Verizon’s bargain bins.

You could sum up the 2605 in one fairly short sentence: it’s a CDMA flip phone with Xpress-on covers, VGA camera, and some dumbed-down Bluetooth 2.0.

There’s two displays, one 128×128 1.2″ outside screeen, and a 1.8″ 128×160 inner screen. Only 18 megabytes of onboard memory, and no expandable memory at that – but then again, with no A2DP, a 2.5mm jack, and VGA picture quality – you won’t be using much of that anyway.

Battery life is pretty…eh. The battery is a BL-4B, 700 mAh, which equates to up to 3.5 hours of talk time.

The Nokia 2605 Mirage is available now at Verizon for $49.99 with a new 2-year contract.

I have not been able to figure out why Nokia keeps releasing these growth-stunted Verizon phones.
I mean, if you’re going to make some kind of effort to produce CDMA phones, then why half-ass it? Why not actually release a decent handset that might make a decent amount of money?

I’ll tell you why. My computer is already small enough to go with me on all trips, so I don’t need a PDA or smartphone. The only reason I need a phone is to make phone calls, so I was looking for the smallest volume and lightest weight I could find (on Verizon) so it could easily go in any pants pocket without feeling like it was weighing me down or bulging too badly. The Mirage is it and after 2 weeks I am quite happy with it.
