What’s Next For Nokia and Location-Based Software

September 10, 2008 in Wireless Industry News

A recent article in Forbes highlights new software that puts your integrated GPS to good use with some cool location-based services. There’s pickings from Google (based on the the up and coming Android operating system), Apple, and of course Nokia.

In the coming months, Nokia will release a Web application through its Internet services brand Ovi that will make it easy to synch mapping information between PCs, the Web and cellphones. Users will be able to plan journeys on their computers and wirelessly transfer itineraries to their phones, says Lenn Pryor, a vice president of Product Marketing, Services & Software. Some manufacturers of personal navigation devices offer such features, but Pryor says “Maps on Ovi” will be the first such application for cellphones.

Nokia is also testing a new application called LifeviNe that plots users’ routes on a map while “geotagging” photos and videos they create–giving them “another way to share a journey,” says the company. And it is baking GPS into more phones, including models that sell for as little as $150 to 200. “We see great potential in location-sensitive applications,” says Savander.

Sounds just like the whole Long Way Down journey that starred the former Obi-Wan Kenobi (aka Ewan McGregor) and his sidekick Charley Boorman. The two guys traveled from Scotland to South Africa by motorcycle with only a Nokia 6110 Navigator phone and recorded the trip along the way. Nice marketing ploy, eh?

And here’s one interesting statistic from the article: “Nokia shipped more than 4.6 million devices with integrated GPS, outnumbering the shipments of standalone portable navigation devices from other manufacturers”.
