Nokia and Visa: NFC Ain’t Dead

Nokia 6212 classic: powered by NFC

Nokia 6212 classic: powered by NFC

Wow, it’s been a long time, NFC – the last time I wrote about you was almost a year ago. At that time, Nokia was conducting yet another trial experiment in London, where NFC guinea pigs received a Nokia 6131 NFC-enabled phone and 200 GBP spending money – not a bad haul.

So flash forward 10 months, and it looks like the next trial run is scheduled for October 2008, when the Nokia 6212 classic will make its debut. The difference between this trial, and previous attempts is simply the scale of the operation: each of the previous trials was conducted in generally smallish areas – this time around, it looks like it’s open to the whole world (at least, if a bank in your area/country supports it). And it’s still backed by Nokia and Visa, two of the biggest companies in their respective industries, so there’s a chance that this thing could seriously make its way into the mainstream by, say, 2015.
