More on the Nokia N85/N79 Phones

As promised, Nokia today dropped the official press release, as well as some new high res images of the N85 and N79 phones. Nothing really out of the ordinary here.

Since the leaks were kept pretty much in check with the N79, until today there wasn’t a whole lot of information available on this quad-band candybar. Basically, it’s your next-gen N78/N82, filled with all the bells and whistles of its predecessors. That means A-GPS/5 megapixel Carl Zeiss camera/Dual-LED flash/WLAN/FM transmitter/stereo speakers/3.5mm connector/etc. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find something missing on the N79 – this phone just seems to have it all.

The 1200 mAh battery is good for up to 5.5 hours of talk time, and up to 29 hours of music playback. If I remember correctly Nokia actually measures music playback time when the phone is in offline mode, so expect a decrease in “real-world” conditions. Gaming time is rated at 4 hours, not exactly an impressive number.

Sadly, even with the above features I’m can’t say I’m satisfied. It’s a high-quality, fully-featured Nseries device, but at the same time it doesn’t feel like a significant improvement over the N78. Unless you count, say, those new Xpress-On covers.

The Nokia N79 will retail for 350 euros, or $512 when it starts shipping in October 2008.

Meanwhile, the N85 aka second-generation N81 will rip through your wallet like never before. It retails for 450 euros, or $658 bucks. For that $658, you get all the features of the N79 in a hefty two-way slider form factor (128 grams hefty, to be exact) with a nice 2.6″ OLED display. You also get a cool 6.9 hours of time time (GSM) and 7 hours of gaming time. And an 8 gig microSD card. Now we’re talking.

It really is going to be a long 2008, isn’t it?…
