Cool: Get Alerted to Speed Traps with Trapster

Ever heard of the Dash? It's a GPS that anonymously reports location data to a central processor, which in turn figures out what areas are moving at a snail's pace, and reroutes the GPS accordingly.

Trapster, while not quite as autonomous, is a mobile service that lets motorists send information about speed traps and red light cameras using simple keystrokes. Taking full advantage of GPS-enabled phones, it can warn (other) users of possible hot spots. Nothing like taking one for the team!

The application is quite simple - just run it in the background, and punch in "#1" to report a speed trap. Or, if you're approaching a speed trap, the service will send you an SMS alert. It also has a voice alert feature (thankfully removable) which announces "live police" when in range.

It's a cool idea, and one that I hope really takes off. Maybe one day our Nokia GPS phones will sport Dash-like connectivity to each other with full support for speed traps and other nasties on the road.
