The Battle Between InterDigital and Nokia

A small company (to the tune of 275 employees) called InterDigital announced today that it is currently in talks with Nokia over licensing several patents related to 3G technology. Normally, this wouldn't really be news except for the fact that last year, InterDigital got mean 'n nasty and tried to get the International Trade Commission to ban imports of the infringing Nokia phones.

InterDigital: Getting Rich Off 3G

InterDigital's plan to ban the phones failed, and last Friday a judge "ordered" the two companies to begin arbitration. If the negotiations are in any way similar to talks between InterDigital and Samsung (Samsung has to pony up $134 million bucks and interest), then it looks like those 275 employees will be getting a nice fat bonus this year.

I couldn't help but paste in a snippet from InterDigital's web site: "Our Goal: Generate Revenue from Every 3G Device Shipped".

Shares of InterDigital rose like mad on the news: 14.65%, to be exact.
