Don't Mess With Europe (Nokia vs. European Commission)

A long, long time ago (okay, back in October) Nokia agreed to acquire digital mapper Navteq in an $8.1 billion dollar deal that was approved by the Navteq's shareholders. Unfortunately, the European Commission wasn't impressed.

European Commission

The European Commission is delving ever deeper into Nokia and Navteq.

The commision/group/watchdog organization is conducting an investigation as to whether the deal breaks any antitrust laws, and has set a big deadline of March 28. If the EC isn't satisfied by then, it'll conduct an "in-depth probe" (heh), which could spell trouble for both parties.

TomTom's acquisition of Tele Atlas is also being examined for antitrust deficiencies, a process that is in its fifth month. Since no deadlines have been set for this one, I'd say it's pretty safe to assume that it won't be cleared any time soon.
