Nokia’s S60 Touch UI (Gizmodo Verdict: Fail)

February 15, 2008 in Wireless Industry News

While I was hoping for new developments in the Haptikos Touch Sensitive Interface at the Mobile World Congress, Nokia instead previewed its Symbian Touch UI.

Gizmodo: “The working prototype here is very rough.”

S60 Touch UI = Fail

Rough is the key word here. Check out the video first at Gizmodo to get a nice taste of the Touch UI nastiness. To describe it in one sentence: it’s pretty much the regular Symbian S60 graphical interface, with touch capabilitiy tacked on.

The Touch UI allows you to use a stylus or a finger and, well, works. But it’s just not cool. Graphically, the UI on the prototype looks just like the default “Nokia Nseries 1″ theme. In one respect, it’s nice that current Symbian users will be able to adapt to the “new” interface fairly easily, yet it still seems so…old.

The good news is that this is just an alpha (or even earlier, I hope) version, and I’d expect the final version to have all the nice little animations that make the iPhone the current king of the Touch World. But I have a feeling the overall look and feel will be pretty much the same as it is now.
