N-Gage First Access: It’s Out

February 4, 2008 in Mobile Phone Software

Got an N81? Head on over to the N-Gage First Access page, where you can download the pre-release beta of the N-Gage platform. Unfortunately you can’t download it straight to your phone – the whole package weighs about 60 megabytes and includes the application and three trial games: System Rush Evolution, Space Impact Kappa, and Hooked On Creatures of the Deep.

Quick Installatiion Instructions:

To get everything installed, you’ll need to copy the files to your memory card. You can do this by using PC Suite or by directly copying to your microSD card via USB card reader. Make sure you’ve got a decent amount of phone memory free, otherwise the installer will quit and spit an error back at you.

Run the “first_access_n-gage_v1.00_1262.sisx” by opening up File Manager, selecting the file, and hitting either Options -> Open or the OK key. Do the same thing for any of the games that you wish to install (system_rush_evolution-first_access.n-gage, for example).

The Verdict

The whole N-Gage interface is snazzy-looking and well done, albeit a little limited. You can add friends, build up your player points, and edit your profile, but for the time being, that’s it.

A little bit about the games:

Space Impact Kappa is just as annoying as Space Impact Light – the controls still aren’t tight enough as they should be and playing a shoot ‘em up on a tiny screen isn’t a great experience. It also gets extremely laggy when displaying either a large bad guy or a moderate amount of bullets on screen. Besides the single-player campaigns, there’s a World Battle mode for paying customers (not available yet).

System Rush is okay. It’s a pretty safe bet for the N-Gage arena (racing games are always good for multiplayer), and it runs at a nice, fast pace. You do have to wait a couple of minutes before entering a game thanks to a severe lack of beta players though.

I didn’t even bother trying Creatures of the Deep as I could not for the life of me figure out how to play it back at the Nokia LA event.

So all in all, it’s a good start for Nokia’s N-Gage First Access. I personally can’t wait for some real games to show up on the platform.
