More on Nokia Maps 2.0

In the Nokia 6210 Navigator preview, I touched briefly on the latest version of the software formerly known as smart2go: Maps 2.0. Here's a slightly more in-depth look at the application.

Nokia Maps 2.0

A tad bit more on Maps 2.0.

Major changes between Maps 1.0 and 2.0 include:

The Walk option - gives you turn-by-turn directions on foot, and even goes so far to (gasp!) cut through parks and around buildings.

Multimedia City Guides - maybe something worth paying for now. No longer just regular city guides, these new breeds of guides include photos, videos, and audio. You can sign up for a 10-minute free trial for small taste of what you're going to be paying for.

Real-Time Traffic Feeds - normally a very useful feature, Traffic is currently broken in this Beta version. "Traffic info service has a known defect that it is downloading too much data when activated. We recommend you do not purchase or use Traffic info with this Beta release." When it does work, the maps software will be able to change your route on-the-fly to avoid such nastiness. Two caveats: it costs money and only works in 18 Euro countries.

Hybrid Satellite Maps - just like Google!

Better Compatibility - Maps 2.0 will eventually work on Series 40 based phones. (expected 1st half of 2008)

Note that 2.0 is still in a Beta stage, but downloadable at Nokia Beta Labs.
