Sprint and Clearwire: Back from the Dead

Back in November, a falling out between Sprint Nextel and Clearwire dealt a huge blow to WiMax, the next big wide-area network technology. And then Sprint's CEO, one of the biggest supporters of the project, was terminated, which probably didn't help matters.

Sprint Nextel and Clearwire together again?

But today the two companies decided to "resume talks" in negotiations that also included Google, Best Buy, and Intel. According to a report published in the Wall Street Journal, Sprint may spin off its WiMax division AND merge it with Clearwire, creating a next-generation network powerhouse.

Of course, nothing's been finalized, so there's still plenty of room for the partnership to fall apart (again).

Meanwhile, investors in Sprint and Clearwire reacted positively to the news - shares of Clearwire rose over 23% while Sprint gained over 8%.
