Nokia’s Q4 2007 Earnings Report (Smashing)

January 24, 2008 in Wireless Industry News

Well, those eroding market share points from Motorola had to go somewhere. And it turns out they fell right into Nokia’s lap – the phone manufacturer announced that it had hit 40 percent market share for the fourth quarter.

Most of the numbers came in pretty much as expected. The company sold 133 million cell phones, profited $2.6 billion on sales of $22.9 million. The 100-pound gorilla is now the 150-pound gorilla.

Nokia hit 40 percent global market share.

Average selling price of Nokia’s devices fell to 83 euros ($120), a trend that the company expects to continue in 2008.

Now, in earlier earnings reports, bigwigs Sony Ericsson and Samsung both reported that cell phone growth would fall to the 9-10% level thanks to just way too many cell phones out there for a shrinking market. Nokia affirmed the 10% number so it seems pretty universal.

In the fourth quarter, the biggest growth markets were the Middle East and Africa (52 percent), the APAC (Asia Pacific) region (43 percent), and China (38 percent). Nokia took an unexpected hit in North America, with sales down 7%.

And in what appears to be a final say about the whole Bochum episode, the CEO mentioned that closing the plant was necessary, due to extraordinarily high labor costs.
