Nokia Wins in Patent Dispute Against Qualcomm

December 13, 2007 in Wireless Industry News

One round in the never-ending battle between the two telecom giants has finally been decided: an International Trade Commission judge found that Nokia did not infringe on several patents owned by Qualcomm.

Qualcomm loses another one

Qualcomm: not on a roll when it comes to lawsuits.

Nokia’s CFO Rick Simonson had this to say about the proceedings:

“This decision confirms our belief that Qualcomm does not have relevant GSM patents,” said Rick Simonson, chief financial officer of Nokia. “This is another failed attempt by Qualcomm to mislead both Nokia and the telecommunications industry.”

I’m not quite sure why the CFO always seems to be dishing out the comments when it comes to competitors or even new acquisitions.

Either way, the ruling doesn’t mean a whole lot considering there are many, many more legal battles to be fought on this side of the Atlantic. But rest easy:

“Qualcomm has yet to prevail in any patent litigation action against Nokia despite it having filed 11 lawsuits around the world over the past two years,” Nokia said.

Qualcomm also recently lost a case against rival Broadcom, which caused a temporary ban of imports for phones containing infringing CDMA chips.
