Nokia Shows Off New Touch Sensitive Screen: Haptikos

November 6, 2007

There wasn’t a whole lot of oohing-and-ahhing when Nokia announced its new touch-screen interface. The receiption was downright lukewarm. Then again, it’s a little hard to be impressed by anything related to touch-screens these days, thanks to certain phones made by Apple and LG that really broke the mold.

This ain't no ordinary 770.

This ain’t no ordinary 770 tablet; it’s been hacked with Haptikos.

In an effort to prove that it’s not just following in the footsteps of the former, Nokia demo’ed its new Haptikos technology to one lucky blogger – the bottom line is it just might be the best thing to hit touch-screens since, uh, touch-screens.

Haptikos is supposed to completely mimic the feel of typing on an actual keyboard, and according to Red – who tested a Nokia 770 demo model with the Haptikos tech – it’s dead-on.

“In use, the touch feedback on the demo device was near on perfect. Each press of a key returned a clunky click and tactile snap on the touchscreen, which made typing feel incredibly responsive and very usable on the smooth screen surface. In fact it was hard to remember that you were using a touchscreen keyboard.”

The technology will be integrated into the next S60 touch-screen phone, release date unknown.

I have to admit, I didn’t exactly enjoy typing on the iPhone OR Nokia’s N800 tablet, so I’m a little skeptical – but hey, it sure sounds good on paper.
