Garmin vs. TomTom, Garmin Wins

November 16, 2007 in Wireless Industry News

between GPS giants Garmin and TomTom has finally come to an end. Only a couple days after digital map provider Tele Atlas’ board gave their final blessing to TomTom, Garmin said “see ya” and bounced away, withdrawing its bid in the process.

The sneaky part is, while Tele Atlas shareholders were cheering the battle on from the sidelines, and TomTom was looking pretty down and out after making a bid that was 45% higher than its original offer, Garmin was busy making deals with the “other” digital mapper, Navteq (soon to be owned by Nokia).

After the dust settled, Garmin got a nice, long contract for new maps that expires sometime in 2015, and TomTom ended up paying a fortune for Tele Atlas.

I love it!
