WiMax now officially recognized by UN

October 21, 2007 in Wireless Industry News

y, the wide-area WiMax high-speed network specification is now a worldwide standard for mobile communications – according to the United Nations.

Unbeknownst to me, the UN actually has a telecommunications division that makes these tough, trying decisions. What the group does when not deciding what to standardize is beyond me.

But being recognized by the UN pretty much ensures that WiMax will not go the way of the free wi-fi in San Francisco initiative, and manufacturers will likely start incorporating the standard into their designs fairly soon. Intel, one of the biggest backers of WiMax, says that a combination Wi-Fi/WiMax chip will be available as early as next year.

Other big players in the WiMax rollout include Nokia, Sprint Nextel, and Samsung.

For those in the dark, WiMax is the next-generation high-speed network that can span up to 40 miles and provide speeds of 70 megabits per second (or ~9 megabytes per second). This isn’t some ghetto wireless technology that can barely cover your living room – it was designed to cover, say, entire cities like San Francisco.
