Western Union soon to be available on mobile phones, scammers rejoice

October 22, 2007

Western Union, that great big money transfer service may soon be heading to a cell phone near you.

The company is currently testing out its payment service that, once available, will allow customers to transfer funds from country to country via mobile phone.

Sounds pretty high-tech, right? After all, this is the age of wi-fi, mobile internet, WiMax, so it’s not much of a surprise to see a company like Western Union taking full advantage of recent advances in wireless technology.

“The Denver-based money-transfer company expects to launch its mobile service in the second quarter of 2008. It will connect a cell phone user to a Western Union operator who will complete the transaction using special company software.”

Alas, it seems that the mobile money transfer service is nothing more than speed dial.

Either way a complete rollout of the low-tech payment service is expected to be completed by Q2 2008.
