Reviewer: Moto RAZR2 and Q9m Just Don’t Cut It

September 13, 2007 in Other Mobile Phones

Motorola’s staking a lot on its new (late) 2007 line of mobile phones. One writer (actually, I believe it’s the same guy who writes all the Associated Press cell phone-related news, including that iPhone vs. N95 vs. Ocean article) tested out two upcoming Moto models – the RAZR2 and the Q9m – over a period of several weeks.

Here’s the short summary: the RAZR2 and Q9m are a big improvement over the originals, but in his own words, “neither of the new phones feels like a winner.”

Motorola Q9m

AP Writer: The RAZR2 and Q9m aren’t winners.

And now for the longer summary, if you don’t want to read the entire article:

Motorola RAZR2, the MotoSavior

The RAZR2 is a larger, beefier version of the original RAZR – in terms of size and features.

According to guy (Peter Svensson), the outside touch-sensitive buttons are difficult to use, liable to be pushed in your pocket if you don’t manually lock the phone, and not very intuitive (when the flip is closed, you can turn on the camera, but since the camera’s on the front of the phone…well…you’re stuck taking a picture of yourself). Video and music downloading features were unimpressive.

On the flip side, the better features of the new RAZR2 included CrystalTalk, which is supposed to filter out background noises, and the voice-activated dialing aspects.

Basically, for a $300 phone (with 2 year contract), there are better choices out there. Might as well spend the extra $100 for the iPhone. (my take, not his)

Motorola Q9M, the Blackberry Wannabe

As for the Q9m, the new version of the MotoQ Blackjack/Blackberry-ish smartphone aimed at Verizon customers, well – it didn’t fare that much better than the RAZR2. Positives included an excellent QWERTY keyboard, and uh…that’s about it. However, the reviewer went into iPhone Comparison Mode and that was that.
