Preview: Nokia 6301 UMA Phone

September 21, 2007 in Nokia Phone News, Nokia Phone Previews

Take the Nokia 6300, add in a dash of wi-fi, sprinkle with a slight color change, and presto! It’s the Nokia 6301 UMA phone.

The short summary: Nokia’s newest thin candy bar provides a “seamless transition” when fielding calls over GSM or WLAN.

It’s the 6301, aka the 6300 with some orange thrown in.

The at-a-glance really gives a good picture of the Nokia 6301. It’s a mid-tier candy bar, with an impressive 13.1 mm thickness and a stainless steel casing. It’s also one of the cheaper models that gives you the UMA option – which is just an easy way of saying you won’t get cut off if your phone switches from GSM to WLAN or vice-versa.

UMA’s a nice feature, but using the WLAN radio drains battery faster than just a simple GSM-only phone call. And with a talk time of 3.5 hours, I’m not sure if the 6301 will be that landline-replacement that Nokia wants it to be.

Nokia also managed to play it cheap by piggybacking on the looks of the 6300 phone. That’s not to say it’s a bad move, as I’m sure this cut quite a few costs . 230 Euro for a WLAN-enabled thin candy bar before the tax/subsidies seems to me a very attractive price.

Is this phone a big deal? Right now, probably not, especially if you live here in the States. Since the 6301′s a tri-band phone (900/1800/1900) and UMA just isn’t that prevalent over here, there’s a good chance we may never see this handset.
