Apple’s New Firmware Bricking Hacked iPhones

September 30, 2007 in Other Mobile Phones

Apple’s new firmware update doesn’t play nice with unlocked iPhones: thanks to the latest 1.1.1 update, numerous iPhone users with hacked handsets found themselves with “bricked” phones – aka mere paperweights.

The good news (according to engadget), is that it’s now possible to downgrade an iPhone on a software level so you can still use third-party applications. Unfortunately, this does not allow you to unlock your phone again – so if you locked your iPhone due to the “upgrade”, you’re still stuck. At least for now.

Earlier this week, Apple sent out a warning that hacked iPhones may not work as intended afer the optional update.

engadget: Downgrade your iPhone to 1.0.2

The iPhone.

You might want to hold off on updating your unlocked iPhone.
