The Latest on iPhone Unlocking (geohot method)

August 25, 2007

In what I suppose should be termed “semi-recent breaking news”, a 17 year-old kid hailing from New Jersey (home of the Nokia Phone Blog!) managed to fully unlock the previously impregnable (or not?) Apple iPhone.

George Hotz, aka geohot, aka soon-to-be college student, has been working on the unlocking process for the better part of two months - a process that involves a hardware hack to work.

A sweet reward for a sweet unlocking achievement.

The entire Step by Step directions are posted on his blog for your enjoyment - of course, you’ll need to crack open your iPhone and solder some wires, as well as figure out how to use certain software tools.

That’s the older news.

Mr. Hotz’s second unlocked iPhone (the first is his personal handset) was posted on ebay a couple of days ago, only to be taken down by probable “lamers” bidding a million dollars.

In the end, geohot traded the second iPhone for a Nissan 350z and three 8gb iphones, courtesy of Certicell founder Terry Daidone. The three handsets will go to two other members of the team and the original iPhone donor.

“I will be sending the iPhones, unlocked if they wish, to jpetrie(the first donater), gray(the reversing genius), and iProof(who is truly amazing at finding stuff online) Thanks a lot everyone. I leave for college tomorrow, and this has been a great end to a great summer.”

I have to give this kid a big hand for what I consider a glorious achievement and a job well done.
