RAZR2 To Be Sold By Verizon Wireless

August 13, 2007 in Wireless Industry News

News flash: Verizon Wireless will start selling Motorola’s RAZR2 mobile phone next month. It’s not an exclusive agreement, meaning that AT&T, T-Mobile, and maybe Sprint will probably start offering the phone not too long afterwards.

Motorola’s RAZR2 will be sold by Verizon Wireless.

Quote from article:
“The phone should be huge for Verizon and Sprint in particular. The two major carriers have been without a blockbuster model to help offset the loss of customers switching to AT&T for the iPhone.”

Is the RAZR2 that big of a deal? Let’s do a quick evolution of the RAZR2-KRZR-RAZR1:

Phone RAZR2 V9 KRZR K1m RAZR V3c
Size 103x53x11.9mm 103x44x17mm 98x53x14.5mm
Weight 125 g 103 g 99 g
Camera 2 megapixel 1.3 megapixel 1.3 megapixel
Bluetooth 2.0, A2DP, AVRCP 1.1 1.1
Connectivity EVDO EVDO EVDO
Memory 70MB, microSD expandable 20MB, microSD 30MB
Battery 770 mAh 880 mAh 740 mAh
Extras External touch screen ?? Thin?

So the RAZR2 is thinner, heavier, and a slightly more featured phone than the previous incarnations. It’ll also start at $299 with a two-year contract. Quite pricey, no?

Motorola sold tons of the original RAZR two years ago because it was thin, and it was cheap. It was the first affordable thin flip phone during a time of fat clamshells and ugly-looking candy bars. The problem was that nearly everyone ended up getting one, turning the RAZR name into some kind of joke.

The way I see it, there’s no way the RAZR2 is going to be a huge hit: mixing in a higher price, harder market conditions, not-quite-cutting-edge features, and a tainted name is not a recipe for success.
