Preview: Nokia 7900 Prism

August 7, 2007 in Nokia Phone News

I wonder just how long the new Prism line of phones will last. The 7500 Prism quietly made its way onto Nokia Asia websites a month ago, but Nokia only officially announced both phones yesterday. More on the 7900 Prism inside.

And there you have it.

The 7900 is a fashion phone that’s a cut above the L’amour collection. If Nokia’s L’amour phones are about the looks, then the Prism Collection is all about personality.

Not that personality means having tons of features at your disposal. Actually, the 7900 seems a bit lacking in this department – there’s a 2 megapixel camera (with flash), but little else noteworthy. Unless you count the 1 gigabyte internal storage that comes at the expense of expandable memory cards.

Personalization, of course, is a different story: there’s a lot included with the 7900 that sets it apart from other Nokia cell phones other than just weird looks. The LEDs beneath the keypad and on top of the phone can be changed to one of 49 colors, and a feature called “living wallpaper” – a kind of visualization that takes into account the time of day, and battery/signal strength to produce different images. And speaking of LEDs, the 7900′s display uses a 2 inch organic LED, which I believe is Nokia’s first use of the technology.

OLEDs are supposed to be a cheaper alternative to other types of displays and better suited for daylight use.

With a release date of sometime in the third quarter of 2007, you just might be seeing the Nokia 7900 Prism on your block soon.
