Samsung’s Now #2

July 14, 2007 in Wireless Industry News

have to update all my old blog entries. South Korean giant Samsung Electronics announced its results for the second quarter of 2007, and it turns out the company shipped out 37.4 million phones compared to a range of 35-36 million for Motorola. Note that Motorola didn’t provide exact numbers as it reports its official numbers on July 19th.

While Samsung’s mobile phone shipments increased by 49% from last year, it did so at the cost of profit margins, which fell to 7.7%.

Overall, Samsung’s profit decreased by 5%, mostly due to weak sales in the semiconductor division. The telecom/wireless phone division’s sales account for about 31% of Samsung’s total earnings.

The second quarter, however, is traditionally the worst one for phone manufacturers.

Samsung might’ve just topped Motorola to become the second largest mobile phone manufacturer.
