Cool: Bluetooth 2.1 Unveiled

June 16, 2007 in Wireless Industry News

After a three year hiatus, Bluetooth’s back and better than ever: behold the version 2.1 specification.

Bluetooth 2.1, baby.

Make way for Bluetooth 2.1.

Updates to the spec include:

  • Faster pairing time – now down to 3 steps. You don’t need to enter stupid passcodes anymore with the use of decades-old encryption (they just thought of this now?!)
  • Less power consumption – which is always a nice upgrade. Up to five times longer battery life, according to Bluetooth.
  • NFC – near-field communication (more on that here). Interesting. Brings us one step closer to being able to pay with a cell phone vs. cash or even credit cards.
  • “Better” security – well, not too sure about this one. But the passcode system is now 6 digits for certain applications that require it, and we also get “eavesdropper protection.”

Devices supporting the Bluetooth 2.1 standard should begin arriving later this year, in time for the holiday season.
