Nokia MD-5W Bluetooth Speakers

Taking a cue from all those wannabe iPod-style speaker docks, behold the Nokia MD-5W Bluetooth speakers.

More in the full entry.

Don’t let the apparent size of the MD-5Ws fool you – they’re actually more like 8 inches by 2 inches by 2 inches. Powered by 4 AA batteries or a Nokia AC-4 travel charger (included in box), this set of speakers lets you listen to music stored on your phone or answer phone calls (via integrated speakerphone) on the go with Bluetooth 1.2 connectivity. They also support the A2DP stereo profile, so you should be able to use it with other compatible devices.

Battery life is decent, running about 30 hours with 4 AA alkaline batteries.

Drawbacks? Yeah, a couple. First is the sound power of the MD-5W bluetooth speakers. The wattage clocks in at a mere 2 * 1.5 watts, not exactly mega bass material. Granted, these are small, but they’re also meant to be standalone speakers. With an output like that, I’d almost rather just play music off my phone and save myself the Bluetooth battery hog.

Which brings us to drawback number two – I cannot for the life of me figure out when I would put these to good use. You can’t use it as a dock to charge your phone (although that would almost negate the whole point of using Bluetooth). There’s no display, so you can’t see what you’re listening to and control is a bit of an issue.

For most situations a pair of Bluetooth headphones would be far more usable.
