How-To: Beware of the Fake "Nokla N95" Phone

As if buying cell phones on ebay wasn't annoying enough already, with a bajillion things that you should know, it's about to get a lot worse - at least if you're thinking of purchasing a Nokia N95 phone.

Learn how to spot the fake Nokia N95.

Learn how to spot the fake Nokia N95 in this How-To.

Behold the "Nokla N95" touch-screen smartphone. A clone of the N95 that's manufactured by some scrubby company in China. Sellers claim that the phone has a 5 megapixel camera, GPS, and even a touch-screen display! Unfortunately what they usually don't tell you is that the "Nokla" is dual-band 900/1800 which makes it pretty useless in the USA.

How to spot the fake Nokia N95 phone

The good news is that it's a clone, but not a very good one. There's some telltale signs that you need to watch out for when it comes to the N95.

Spot the differences between the Nokla N95 and the Nokia N95 - front view

Here's a side-by-side comparison of the two phones, frontal view. Note:

The stylus-driven menu buttons (red box). The fake N95 has a "touch-screen" with a stylus, and the easiest way to spot the counterfeit is by checking this area. If you see a row of little icons (compare to the real N95, bottom), then it's a knock-off.

Wrong buttons and no dual-slide. (yellow and green boxes) In place of the real N95's Menu/Multimedia Key buttons, the fakey N95 has a Play button (yellow box) and a Stop button (green box). This is mainly because it doesn't have a dual-slide mechanism, so whoever designed the knock-off dropped the playback buttons anywhere. And since there's no Symbian OS, there's no need for the menu buttons either.

Back view of the real and fake N95s:

Back of the Real and Fake Nokia N95

The Color. The real Nokia N95 comes in two colors: Silver/Plum and Silver/Sand (sort of a silvery-yellowish color). The plum and sand colors refer to the back cover of the phone (which includes the sides too). However, the counterfeit has a back cover that's black.

Lens Cover Thumb-Switch (orange box). Doesn't exist on the fake N95, but very prominent on the real thing.

Nokia Logo (teal box). When the two phones are looked at from this angle, note the difference in the logo placement, size, and direction (it's flipped on the fake).

Some random camera oddity on the fake (purple box). Not sure what this piece is supposed to be, but there's some random design on the Nokla N95 (the knock-off) that's in the shape of a 3. Don't be fooled!

Also note that the buttons on the fake look cheaper and are raised slightly higher than they're supposed to be.

Some more pictures as a reference (the fake N95):

The Nokla N95 open.The Nokla N95 in the box.The Nokla N95 in...a different box.

If an auction refers to a "replica", "Nokia N95-inspired", "NOKLA", or sounds way too good to be true, avoid it like the plague.

Hi. I got fooled by a supplier from China saying that he was selling N95. I paid 145£ for it, and it's not possible to get my money back. i have not get the "thing" on me. what do you thing of it? is it worth to use, or should i sell it right away on ebay? i am so piss off =(

cary on June 15, 2007 11:15 AM said...

if you paid by credit card, i suggest you call your cc company and do a chargeback. failing that, i wouldn't sell it on ebay since they've been taking down the fake nokia n95 auctions.

Paul on July 5, 2007 9:04 AM said...

That "random camera oddity on the fake" (purple box, rear picture) is a Three (Hutchinson 3G) logo. They are a well known mobile operator in most of the western world (but not America I guess!). In the UK they are the only company not to offer the N95, probably why the fakers decided to put it on the phone.

Dose NOKIA N95 include touch sceen? Can I use the tv jack port in any tv?

cary on July 5, 2007 1:25 PM said...

nope, no touch-screen. the tv av cables can be plugged into any tv with composite inputs (the red, white, and yellow ones).

@Paul: thanks for the info. you're right, we don't have Three here.

note to everyone: there are also several versions floating around without the logo, and with a gigantic camera lens on the back. i'll update as soon as i get some more good pictures.

hello all, one more thing that i have noticed in the fake n95 n real is that , in fake nokia u will find the USB port in the fone is on the left side just next to the memory card slot and in real nokia fone the USB port is at the bottom of the fone, next to the charging socket.and also in the real n95 on the left side there is that TV connecting jack.

"NOKLA" N95 has only 900/1800 Frequency band and I guess that will not work in America as carrier frequency might be different (850/1900).
There are more of these on www.ebay.co.in
Specifications listed are exactly as NOKIA N95, but I doubt if they're true.
I made the payment and just looked at this forum and came to know about its 2MP camera... Everything else if works as expected, is just fine for me.

I've informed ebay about this false feature;
Thanks a lot people!

Who would buy a #499 phone for #134 and expect the real thing.

I bought the Nokia clone on the basis that it takes dual SIM cards (without cutting). It does and it works.

I am having trouble with the bluetooth though: well you can't have everything.

Does the REAL Nokia come with a MicroSD card? I'm looking at a phone that looks exactly like the real phone but there is a MicroSD card included in the box where there is a specifically molded space for it. Should I beware, or is the memory card just not mentioned in any of the literature.

Well people, I got duped. Someone sold me this Nokla piece of shit claiming it to be the real thing. I got lucky because I paid with PayPal and got my money back. I kept the phone though LOL.
Just for info: It's a piece of junk! If you think that cell phones were perfect 3 or 4 years ago then you can use this thing. Otherwise forget it. No GPS, no Bluetooth, no double slider, no 5MP camera, no TV connector etc. etc.
It's garbage and it's embarassing.

I got a fake mistakenly, started a paypal dispute and it's turned to a I said he said debate. Seller claims I got a real Nokia N95 and just want money. $570 down the drain. Look at buyer feedback folks or prepare for hell.

Dennis on September 7, 2007 2:23 AM said...

Guy the Nokla phone is waay different from the N95. The only thing the same is the case. The screen caps the icons are all copied and the best way to check is to look at the dual slide option. The fake one cannot dual slide. Also the speakers of the fake are very loud. Has bluetooth and Micro SD functions but thats it. No GPS and all the cool features.

Actually, I have the fake variant of N95s.

Bad things so far - it has some problems with flash card. Its slot has weird metal contacts and they don't always detect a memory card inside. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

And, I live in Russia, so this phone comes with Russian language. But it is completely f***ed up - translation was made through translation program and its quality is very bad. I understand English much better that "Russian" in this phone.

Also, when you use touch-screen and stylus to write something, it recognises only Latin and Chinese.

However, it cost me only 190$ (believe it or not), and I think it is a good price for such thing :)

Jay on October 10, 2007 5:16 AM said...

I take your point on board but I dont think anyone will be fooled into thinking that the Nokla is the real Nokia. But the fact of the matter is that it is great value for money. I paid Rs.4600 for the fake N95 and it is a darn good phone for that money. It would not be appropriate to compare it with Nokia N95 which costs Rs.25000. For this price, you cannot get a better phone with better features. Period. It has everything I want and it can handle dual sims. If you can get it for under Rs.5000 I would recommend it to anyone.

I used to own a nokia n95 real one and the problems i used to have wiht it was a lot more than these so called fakes, freezing and having to take the battery out to reset it every 3 or 4 days was a pain thats what i call a problem phone.

hey! there is another fake model which i happened to buy off china land!- 250 Euros. Its a great 1st grade copy. In fact, the above details to distinguish fakes from original do match. Everything is the same... buttons, camera and shutter esthetics's , colour, prints, size, MMC, packaging box, charger, phone booklet, dual slide with media player... Only the software, which is not symbian and camera Megapixels which are something around 1.2MP with really shitty picture capture. The front logo (right above the screen) is slightly more cramped than that of the original. And the screen is a normal LCD not like the original N95 screen. The Battery is made in Hungary and is very similar to the original too. Dont buy from china. they do steal ideas and our money... remember... if u pay peanuts,.. u get monkeys. :( .Hope you wont get fooled like we were . gud luck

Y go for branded mobiles when they dont have product value consideration. A new mobile release in branded for 30k and by the end of one year it comes to less than 8K.
I think better ppl go for non branded for less prize (use and thro) say if we buy for 5k use for 6 months and thro get another one so u lose 10k ina year, where as in branded the mobile drop more than 20k....
Its time for People have to think and question the branded owner for the huge prize, just for its brand

hi, someone offered me a Nokia N95 and she said it was a replica. But it wasnt a touch-screen and looked like a Nokia N95. It was written on the phone Nokia and not Nokla and its buttons were like a reguler N95 but it was only 3 megapixels. so, what should i do?

HateMe on December 28, 2007 10:30 AM said...

dont forget the spelling at the back of the cam. the fake cam spells "Carl ZESS" instead of "Carl Zeiss"... Nokia should do something... Chinese people will really do anything just to sell their products.

Hi guys, Im in the UK and I bought one from china, not knowing it was a fake, but im actually really impressed with it, it slides both ways, looks exaclty the same as the original ( its the black one ) , the camera is alright, the only thing it doesn't have is the 8gb memory ( im buying an 8gb micro sd card from ebay for £40) and the gps ( which i'd never use ).
So for £100 pounds i think it turned out alright...

joel on December 30, 2007 3:02 AM said...

guyz..

its just easy to detect if the n95 is fake or real.

in the battery it is written "Nokla" which is absulotely wrong and very far from the word "Nokia" you have to use your eyes guyzzz to not waste your MONEY, and everything. It might blown up also and perhaps it will be blown inside your room, house..
So be careful, be wise in buying mobile phones..

Thank God, I'm not the only one being fuck*d. I just called Amazon today to report a counterfeit Nokia N95 8GB. yes! they counterfeit the 8Gb already.

I was so pissed when I realized it is counterfeit. The screen has icons in the bottom. Screen measure 2.5 "
(The original is 2.8") The Play, Forward, Rewind Pause,Stop buttons on the top slider are ridiculously just fucking "prints" not really a button, just a goddom ink of arrow plays. There is no symbian OS, Camera quality is low, video capture is is fucking 3gp low quality compair to the real N95, it is mp4. No GPS, No Wi-Fi, And the worst thing about is I paid just as the same amount as what I would pay for a real N95 8gb... God forgive me for my bad words today.

It is advisable for you to buy it. It is quite chep and available in the city of Bilaspur....this is in 36 china town. (Chhattisgarh)

There is a NokLa n95, ver. 2.0 out. The phone is triband, no touch screen, and apparently a version of the Symbian OS.

Other fake nokia phones are already out like n81, n93i, n82, nokia 6120 classic, nokia 5310 . I was fooled once when i asked about the 6120 on a store near my place. I asked if how much it will cost me if i trade my n71 for a 6120 classic and the shop keeper told me i only need to add Php 500 for the trade. I was shocked about the price. I asked him if I could take a look at the phone and I was disappointed. The screen resolution was not like it should be, the screen was smaller than 320x240, the menu wasn't anything like any s60v3 phones and there were no nokia application installed. Another phone i looked at is the 5310. I already knew it was a fake because of the opening image. the sound was kinda annoying and the graphics of the two hands holding each other is too slow. Another phone was the n93i. I was kinda intrigued when i saw it so I asked if I could look at it. When I opened the phone the inside didn't look anything like any n93i. It has a touch screen and no menu button. the camera was not 3mega pixel and the screen was way much smaller. I'm kinda disappointed cause these 3 phones that I looked at was the 3 phones I really want to have. I cant believe that they can already make fake nokia phones.

I just recieved a Nokia N95 which I bought on ebay from a UK seller. After unpacking it I wasn't sure about the feel of the phone, it felt cheap. After switching it on I was pretty sure that it was a fake - very loud speaker even after turning the volume down to the lowest setting, very poor quality menu screen with icons that differ from the real nokia menu. No WLAN connectivity, poor user interface and generally not a real Nokia.]
It is obviously a latest generation fake, it has a dual slide screen, the correct tv jack (but no cable), usb slot in the right place, a 1Gb micro sd card but no phone memory (Should have 150mb)

I am about to start a dispute with ebay to get a full refund, including post and packaging!

I'm not happy!

I am planning to buy a N95 8gb when i found out that there are already clones being manufactured here in my place.. Can someone also do a spot check on the real and fake N95 8gb? It has all the features i like, but how did they ever thought of removing the lens cover that was in its predecessor, i think that was a great feature they took out from the orig. one. i can understand why they removed the memory card slot, but not the lens cover... D-UH! anyway, guess I'll have to pass on this one until NOKIA can make (or has already) a touchscreen smartphone... and take the lens cover back...

China phones is also sold here in the Philippines. Like N95, iphone immitations.

It's very cheap though, but it doesn't have warranty. It seems like China is the No.1 country when it comes to selling "fake" phones.

They almost got me. They wanted me swap my Nokia 6680 with their new Nokia N95 but when I touch it, the phone is very light weight and the picture of the screen is much a little bit too neon in colors compare to a real Nokia phone and so as the pixel of the camera is not that cool as I wanted it... so.. just beware...I guess the best way to buy a Nokia is in it's Nokia Center itself.

Ameer on February 16, 2008 9:36 AM said...

Hi,
I have also a fake N95 matching almost all criterias of above. But my bluetooth works, USB cable works fine. But Camera doesnt seem to be 5 MP as noted. It connects to PC very easily in "Mass storage/Com Port/ Webcam".
But it doesnt be detected by the Nokia PC Suite Software. Can I Update the Phone software in any other way...?

Ufff what a mess with these Nokla buyers. Just some notes:

- Nokia as a Finish company manufactures not only there, but all over the world. NSeries in particular are mostly manufactured in China,Finland,Canada and UK, so the thing that is from China doesn't mean it is fake as first instance.

- Some of the phones sold in ebay or other webpages at so much lowerprices than the carrier's or Nokia stores, are normaly either fake or if you are lucky, they are real ones, but prototypes (funtions won't work best 'cos they are not final releases) or they are real but stolen (you can also check the IMEI's and type of phone when you remove the battery, to make sure it is a real Nokia phone).

- People who is happy with the Nokla fake phone were not suppose to be the target of the N95 in the first place, 'cos they probably bought it 'cos they heard it was cool and the best, but they don't really needed what the Nokia N95 offers, which is so much better than iphone and so much ahead of its time (Integrated GPS, Wifi, 3G, Quadband, excelent cameras, as it has 2, bluetooth stereo A2DP if you are into wireless technologies, windows messenger, Fing VoIP, Flickr and Vox software, Nokia Maps, until 4gb micro SD memory, the new N96 has 16gb of internal memory, push email, push to talk, you can play your movies, everything a techy person needs (so far of course...lol)

- Nokia has already touch screen devices, but they are internet tablets. Soon also phones or multimedia computers as they call it now.

- If you really needed the N95 all functions and got fooled 'cos you thought you could pay less for it, or just couldn't afford it try to make a reasearch and think what's best, there are many ways of getting a N95 or others directy from the Nokia online stores (so much better cos they are SIM unlocked) and you can pay with credit card sometimes 12 months without interests, etc. check on your country Nokia Flagship store or online store. Nokia gives production priority to their direct sales stores, so less risk to have a damanged phone and if something happens, they change it for a new one right away.

- When somebody wants to use all the features of the N95, has to have unlimited internet package, or use wi-fi a lot. If you get it with a carrier with a plan that suits you, normally the phone is for free (of course you sign a 2 year contract) I pay 30 euros per month with unlimited GPRS internet and the N958GB was for free when I extended my contract. It is worth it, because to use all the features you are a person that is online all the time blogging, uploading pictures, chatting, using VOIP, which is cheaper than making regular calls, you would save more money at the end when you invest in the original, than in a fake replica.

- When you buy a mobile phone, make sure you use google to search what is the best phone according to what you need/use, there are great blogs like this one, no only Nokia's, where you can compare the phones and see what's best for price, there's a Nokia phone for each one of us.

Good luck!
