Nokia and Samsung Join Forces

April 16, 2007 in Wireless Industry News

No, this isn’t a merger of the largest proportions. But #1 and #3 handset manufacturers Nokia and Samsung are working together to get mobile TV (specifically DVB-H) devices and standards, well – standard.

This may be a reality some day.

The two companies will support the OMA BCAST standard with new products to hopefully open the floodgates on the mobile TV market, which could grow to be a gigantic industry.

Samsung already produces CBMS OSF (a different standard for DVB-H) handsets, as well as mediaFLO-enabled phones (a competing mobile TV force created by Qualcomm). Currently, Nokia only manufactures DVB-H mobile phones and has been pushing the standard pretty hard.
