3 Billion Cell Phones by 2008

April 26, 2007 in Wireless Industry News

The head of Nokia’s mobile phone unit, Kai Oistamo, predicted that 3 billion people globally will have a cell phone by the end of 2007…

Nokia expects 3 billion cell phones by year’s end.

And with Nokia’s market share at a current 36%, we’re talking 1.1 billion mobile phones served by Nokia. Besides the obvious “wow! that’s a huge number!”, it’s a little misleading since many of those phones will be in emerging markets, where Nokia sells lousier phones with lousier margins.

And meanwhile, in related news, shares of Nokia have been doing nothing but going UP. The stock is at its 52 week high, currently $25.75 from a low point of $18.23 – a healthy gain of more than 40%.
