Would you pay $15 a month for mobile TV?

March 1, 2007 in Wireless Industry News

Today Verizon rolled out its new mobile TV service to customers. Available for the price of $15 bucks a month, the 24/7 service (called MediaFLO, developed by Qualcomm Inc., the same Qualcomm that is currently involved in several lawsuits with Nokia Corp.) has 8 channels – among them MTV, CBS, and ESPN.

I want my MTV!

This is different from Verizon’s Vcast service which is more or less short, crappy quality clips. MediaFlo programs are the full-length TV shows.

AT&T/Cingular says it plans to roll out the MediaFLO service to its customers in the future.

There are currently two competing mobile TV standards locked in a frightening battle over the entire world: MediaFLO and DVB-H. While both sides have similar backing from most phone manufacturers, DVB-H has the advantage of an early push by Nokia with the release of the N92 phone (in other words don’t expect any MediaFLO phones from Nokia). Still, there’s no DVB-H here (as in USA) and it doesn’t look like it’s coming soon.
