Nokia to Lay Off Up to 700 Employees

I'm not sure whether this is good news, bad news, or even newsworthy news. But this IS a Nokia blog, so I just announce 'em as I get 'em.

Anyway, "up to" 700 Nokia employees will be Nokia employees no longer. Of course, since Nokia currently employs about 68,000 people 700 of them isn't a gigantimundo deal. According to Juha Akras, one of the company's senior VP's for human resources, some of those lucky 700 will be shifting around into new positions. (last year, about 10,000 employees were moved to new positions)

All this comes as a result of Nokia's collaboration with German network communications equipment manufacturer (and sometimes crappy cell phone manufacturer) Siemens AG. According to Forbes, the deal caused a redundancy of "10 to 15 percent of the 60,000 employee base over the next four years." In plain English I believe that means some people are "naga...naga...naga...not gonna work here anymore, anyway."

The 700 heads had nothing to do with Nokia Siemens Networks. They came out of the Enterprise Solutions division and had zero to do with NSN.
