Judge Orders Delay in Qualcomm’s Lawsuit
In the latest of a series of lawsuits between best buddies Qualcomm Inc. and Nokia Corp., a judge has ordered an indefinite delay to the proceedings. The order comes only a couple weeks before a major licensing agreement with the two companies is set to expire.
According to an attorney who is familiar with the case, the two may be negotiating a settlement to avoid a costly trial.
Qualcomm set the stage by suing Nokia in several countries last year over the infringement of several wireless technology patents. Nokia eventually returned the favor and sued Qualcomm in the US, claiming that “Qualcomm fail[ed] to adhere to adhere to global licensing rules.”
It’s been an ugly battle for both sides. Should the licensing contract expire in April, Qualcomm stands to lose a giant customer, and it looks like Nokia will have to buy chips from someone else.
