Phone Preview: Nokia N77 Phone

Finally, the big big news so far at 3GSM: a new Nokia Nseries model has been added to what seems like an already strong hand (N76, N95, etc) for 2007. Meet the Nokia N77 phone.

Just when you thought that mobile TV was out of style (in other words, what happened to the N92?), Nokia comes back with a candy bar no less, headed straight for DVB-H. The N77 triband (900/1800/1900 + WCDMA2100) "multimedia computer" has a 2.4" screen, stereo sound, and gimmicky TV watching software features.

And you know what, I don't like it at all. It has that two-piece look that makes it seem like the back cover is a separate piece from the front - which I find looks really horrendous. And how are you supposed to watch TV on this thing? At least the defunct N92 and N93/N93i had tiltable screens so you could adjust the angle. Then again, those are flip phones. This isn't.

Ugliness is in the hands of the beholder, so I won't make any more fruitless comments about it. However, in terms of size, it's hella thick at 18.8 millimeters.

Battery life is about average, with the BP-6M battery giving out up to 4 hours of talk time, 7.5 days of standby time, and up to 5 hours of mobile TV viewing.

The camera is standard 2 megapixel fare, integrated flash and video recording but nothing really groundbreaking here.

I call this an underpowered Nokia N73 with DVB-H tacked on for good measure.

Of course, we won't be seeing the N77 in the good 'ol USA any time in the near future. Still, the N77 will start shipping sometime in the second quarter of 2007.
