Wireless Week in Review (Week of November 26)

December 4, 2006 in Wireless Industry News

So the first big news this week was the official announcement of several new low and mid-tier Nokia phones: the 6300, 6290, 6086, and 2727. Nothing really new to scream about other than the introduction of a somewhat thin candy bar style phone.

Two other CDMA phones were announced today, but it’s pretty much more of the same (they’re the Nokia 1325 and 1265, very low-end handsets).

The second big news was Nokia’s OTHER announcement: that profit margins on the company’s phones would be lower than expected for the next two years, and growth would be slowing. Ouch. Surprisingly, Nokia shares only dropped about 1% iin price as as the news hit the markets. Prudential Bank did issue an analyst downgrade for the stock but it didn’t seem to have that much of an effect.

CNN did a very cool article called Your cell phone = your wallet that pretty much summarizes why we STILL can’t pay for a can of soda with our cell phones. (whereas say Japan and Korea have been able to do it for ages) The problem? Companies can’t find a working business model. Translation: everyone wants a piece of the profits, and it seems no one can decide on a fair split.

The Terminator is on the move in California: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently established a Broadband Task Force to “increase broadband adoption” and research better technologies. Ok, it has nothing to do with the wireless industry, but I couldn’t help it. It just sounded ridiculous.

Best Buy (known affectionately as Worst Buy) is planning on opening several new mobile phone-only test stores in the Manhatten, NY area, with the ultimate goal of taking down rivals Radio Shack, Circuit City, and I’m sure all the Cingular/Verizon/Sprint company stores out there.

Sprint and Samsung are hailing the new Sprint Power Vision M610 as America’s Thinnest Phone, at just smaller than half an inch. The M610 is a clamshell with a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and MicroSD expandable memory.

Well, that’s it for this week. Tune in next time for more fun facts.
