Wireless Week in Review (Week of December 3)

December 7, 2006 in Wireless Industry News

The first week of December was filled with cold, cold weather that quickly replaced the sub-60, 70 degree weather that we’ve been having in the Northeast. The news wasn’t much better, either…

Rumors are certainly abound for Apple’s iPhone. One analyst covering Apple says the company should announce an iPod-like phone at the Macworld convention in January, with a possible smartphone (integrated keyboard included) being released later on in the year.

A new study from the Danish people of Denmark highlighted the fact that cell phone usage DOES NOT cause cancer. The study tracked people with cell phone usage going as far back as 21 years ago, and is one of the first to study the long term effects of mobile phones. In the past, numerous studies have been conducted on the same subject, with most being rather inconclusive about the whole deal.

A company called Oz Communications is bringing some of the big social-networking sites to your cell phone. Currently, Oz provides clients Cingular, Sprint Nextel, and T-mobile with email and instant messaging services. Non-Verizon customers may have some bit of hope in bringing YouTube to their mobile phones.

China is opening up their 3G licenses for sale in the next couple of months. China Netcom, China Telecom, and China Mobile are expected to receive licenses for the third-generation network.

Motorola is starting to push the new MOTOROKR E6 PDA SmartPhone. The main draw of the E6, of course, is the Touch Window screen that is rare in a PDA phone (think Nokia 6708s or Sony Ericsson P series of phones). Secondary features include a 2 megapixel camera, SD expandable memory slot, handwriting recognition software, and the famous Business Card Reader. The MOTOROKR E6 will be available throughout China and Hong Kong.

Looks like that’s all I could find for this week. Tune in next week for another edition of the Wireless Week in Review!
