Week in Review (Week of December 24)

December 28, 2006 in Wireless Industry News

Happy Holidays, folks. Hope your Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanzaa/Whatever was more eventful than my own. In this entry: the N76 vs. the RAZR, WiMAX, Nokia in 2007, and Verizon’s ads.

TheStreet.com did a little article on new competition for the “aging” RAZR. One of the highlights: Nokia’s new N76 phone, which incidentally has not been officially announced yet. The N76 is expected to be a “RAZR-thin” mobile with high-resolution screen and 3 megapixel camera – all for under $300. Other competitors included Sony Ericsson’s new Cybershot-based camera phone, RIM’s Blackberry Pearl, and of course the currently non-existent Apple iPhone.

On a similar note, BusinessWeek did a little special on Nokia’s outlook for 2007. The bottom line? Nokia is coming out running with a slew of new phones designed to plug up holes in the company’s current line of handsets. Analysts are boosting market share estimates for Nokia in 2007.

Sprint and Nokia may be closing a deal soon to establish a $16 billion dollar global WiMax network. WiMax is reportedly as fast as wired broadband with the nice little side feature being that it can cover entire cities. (compare that to wi-fi, which typically only works in cafes, libraries, etc) Nokia would join Samsung and Motorola if the deal goes through.

Verizon Wireless has a nice belated Christmas present for their valuable customers:
“VZ will enable placement of banner ads on Internet sites that its customers visit via their mobile phones, The New York Times’ online edition reported.”

So that’s it for the Holiday edition of the Week in Review. Tune in next week!
