Preview: Nokia 770 Navigation Kit

December 6, 2006 in Nokia Phone Accessories

The Nokia 770 wasn’t exactly one of Nokia’s most well received products. Sure, it ran Linux, had wi-fi support and was supposed to be an universal “internet tablet,” but the truth was for the price, you might as well have gotten a cheap laptop. It would’ve accomplished a lot more, anyway.

Nokia 770 Navigation Kit

So now Nokia has fired back with the Nokia 770 Navigation Kit. The Kit includes a Nokia GPS module, a 1 gigabyte RS MMC card, a set of (European) maps, car holder, car charger, and Navicore Personal 2007, the GPS location software.

Let’s look at the features:

First, the 770 allows you to use the GPS software while surfing the Internet. Nokia seems to be making a big deal out of this. But either way, one nice feature (if you have a constant wi-fi connection) is that you can get traffic updates, new map downloads, and points of interest in the area more quickly and easily than with a standard GPS device.

The battery life is also pretty decent – the 770 can get up to 15 hours of navigational time (which doesn’t take into account whether it’s being charged by the included car charger). The GPS device has its own battery, which Nokia says will last over 15 hours.

The Nokia 770 Navigation Kit will retail for 199 Euros (about 265 US Dollars). To be honest, it’s a little hard to say whether the Navigation Kit is really worth it. Prices for GPS devices have done nothing but fall for the past couple of years, and you can get a very decent one for slightly more than the Naivgation Kit’s retail. Not to mention that this Navigation Kit won’t be coming to the States for quite a long time – it doesn’t look like there are any maps available for non-European countries yet.
