Wireless Week in Review (Week of Nov. 12)

November 16, 2006 in Wireless Industry News

Another quiet week in the wireless industry is behind us. Here’s a quick recap of the better news in the past 7 days.

RUMOR MILL: CNN reports that Apple’s long-awaited iPhone may be released “within the first six months of next year.” A Taiwanese company called “Foxconn Electronics” will be producing the handset, and the first shipment is expected to be close to 12 million units. That’s a lot of iPhones.

AT A RECENT investor conference last Wednesday, Motorola gave a pretty upbeat expectation for this quarter. Apparently, Motorola has the “largest order book” for mobile phones ever.in its history. This seems to make sense as the newer phones (RAZR, KRZR, etc) have started penetrating the cell phone market.

IF YOU’RE TIRED of seeing Dick Clark on the tube every single year (and for the past 34 years to be exact), you’ve got an alternative for the end of 2006. Nokia is launching the aptly-named Nokia New Year’s Eve, an international event starting in Hong Kong and finishing off somewhere in the Big Apple. Highlighted artists include the Black Eyed Peas and the Scissor Sisters.

RUMOR MILL, PART II: Word on the street is that Sony Ericsson will be producing an ultra slim, Walkman music phone in early 2007. They’re going after the big cheese Motorola and their hated RAZR line of mobile phones. Called “Ai,” after Japanese tennis player Ai Sugiyama, the RAZR wannabe is actually more like a SLVR wannabe – it’s a candy bar form factor phone available in – gasp – black and silver colors.

My head is seriously killing me right now, so it looks like that’s it for this week.
