The Nokia 8801 Now $349.99 at Newegg

The latest hot "deal" involving Nokia phones is this one straight from one of the most highly rated retailers on the 'net:

Nokia 8801...well, close enough.

Newegg is selling the Nokia 8801 slider phone for $349.99, unlocked, with no activation. That's a damn good price for a phone that was once 1100 dollars. (on ebay, anyway) Read my Nokia 8800/8801 preview here.

If you're really set on the 8800 series of phones (and you value form over function) then this is a great deal. Go here:

and buy the phone.

Because you probably don't want to read the rest of this entry.

Let me start off the Cons section of this deal with one of the lingering problems with the 8800/8801: the lousy battery life. The 8801 uses a teenybopper 600 mAh lithium ion battery. That is more or less one of the smallest capacity batteries for any current Nokia phone. And that is not a Good Thing. Why the battery is so crappy, I have no idea.

The Cons of the 8801, part 2: Features. They uh, kinda suck. They're almost non-existent. The 8801 has a 0.6 megapixel camera (SVGA), and that's the most impressive feature of the bunch. You certainly won't be wowing people with your FM radio.

Which leads me to the conclusion: if you have a spare $349.99 to spend, besides giving it to me, use that money as a down payment on a REAL phone. Like a Nokia N80, N73, N75, or N95. The N80 is way cooler in my book than the 8801, and it has features that most people would never dream of. (and once the N95 is officially released, that will probably render the N80 obsolete)

And it looks good to boot.
