Week in Review (Week of October 1)

October 6, 2006 in Wireless Industry News

Lots of wheeling and dealing going on this issue of the Week in Review: Trimble, Wibree, the new 5500 sport phone, Motorola, and T-mobile.

Okay, so Nokia started the week with an announcement highlighting their latest deal with Trimble, a company that produces GPS/location-based software. The cooperative effort between the two companies allows Nokia to use Trimble’s services, while Trimble gets to use Nokia’s patents for pretty much whatever they feel like it. It’s a little confusing.

On to bigger and better things. On Tuesday, Nokia released a press release introducing “Wibree Technology.” Wibree is supposed to be another radio-based connection, kind of like Bluetooth, which requires less power to operate. However, the big thing is that it’s an open technology – which means developers have more or less complete access to the specifications.

More interesting news included a new Nokia phone release – the Nokia 5500 Sport Music edition. The old Nokia 5500 was a very odd device that included a pedometer, calorie counter, and text-to-speech feature (in other words it can read your text messages out loud). It was also made of steel and rubber.

The NEW Nokia 5500 now has a 2 megapixel camera, included 512 megabyte microSD card, and more included accesories like armbands and waist straps and whatnot. One nice feature (besides the text-to-speech thing) is the ability to hook up the 5500 to an external GPS to track distance traveled, etc. It also runs on Symbian (making it a smartphone).

Remember Motorola’s merger with Symbol Technologies (last week)? Well, now several class action lawsuits challenging the intended merger are hitting Symbol square in the face.

Meanwhile, T-mobile announced that it has already started upgrading old technology to support the $4.2 billion dollars worth of airwaves purchased from the FCC airwaves auction. The date until their high speed network (make that their 3G network) goes completely live across the nation? End of 2008.

That’s all for this week. I hope there’s more exciting news next time…
