Nokia Week in Review (Week of August 13)

August 17, 2006 in Nokia Phone News

It’s the Nokia Nseries Studio, the FCC auction again, banner advertising on cell phones, and Finland’s own Flagship store, in this week’s Week in Review!

This week’s bull market boost Nokia’s share price by almost nearly 10% during the past four days. NOK opened at $19.72 on Monday to close today at a sky-high $21.29.

Monday also brought another press release from Nokia titled: “New short film by Gary Oldman premieres on the
Nokia Nseries Studio.” Gary Oldman is apparently a famous actor (I don’t know Gary Oldman from Gary Coleman) who’s starred in several hit movies such as Harry Potter and Batman Begins, as well as lesser known blockbusters like “Basquiat.” However, the point is not that he’s famous or not famous or whatever. Apparently this guy made a movie using the Nokia N93 multimedia “computer” – it’s a 2 minute short film “featuring a round reflection in rippling water set to a haunting soundtrack.” I have no idea what all of that means. Maybe someone else here does?

And as I mentioned on Tuesday, The Nokia N93 multimedia computer won the 2006-07 European Media Phone award by the EISA. I wrote a pretty length post about it.

Nokia also announced that they opened yet another Flagship store, this time in Finland. Not quite sure why they built this one AFTER the ones in Chicago, Moscow and Hong Kong.

Remember last week’s Week in Review? Well, the radio spectrum “airwaves” auction is going on now, and so far Verizon and T-mobile are the top bidders with 60% in current winning bids. T-mobile has $3.7 billion (BILLION) dollars of winning bids, Verizon has $2.8, and Cingular has a lowly $680.9 million. Since becoming the third (crappiest) wireless service provider in the USA, T-mobile was expected to hit the FCC auction hard.

And in other news, Sprint/Nextel and Verizon are currently testing out banner advertising on their respective cell phone networks. I suppose this isn’t as bad as text messaging advertising, but it’s annoying to see companies always going for the bucks no matter how big.

Well, it looks like that’s it for this edition of the Week in Review. Tune in next time for another fun-filled weekly summary of the wireless industry.
